She is likely to discuss the issue of children's fever that has led to some deaths.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday visited the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata to discuss various top-priority health issues for the state. Banerjee is expected to discuss among other things, the issue of children’s fever that has claimed several lives recently.
Heads of all state-run hospitals will discuss the issue with Banerjee, over video-conferencing. Some senior doctors are also present, apart from the West Bengal health secretary.
Three children died in Malda state hospital after they had fever. The exact cause of death is not clear. They also had breathing distress. Such fever was initially reported in Jalpaiguri, and over the past few days several south Bengal districts have also reported similar cases, leading to fear and panic among parents. Under the backdrop of COVID-19, this has become worrying for the government as children have not been vaccinated yet. A committee has been formed to look into the causes and nature of the fever.
The School of Tropical Medicine has already taken swabs from children with fever and prepared its initial findings. Some types of influenza are suspected, leading to doctors conducting further tests. Parents have been advised to not panic, and to consult doctors.
