Mamata Banerjee in Ghatal, says “Centre not doing anything to mitigate the problem”

Need of the hour is to implement Ghatal masterplan, said the Bengal CM.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday visited Ghatal block of West Midnapore district, that has been severely flooded. Banerjee walked through the flooded areas and distributed food and other flood relief materials to people affected by the waterlogging.

Banerjee took to social media to say that “despite raising the concerns multiple times, the Central government took no cognizance of the grave situation.” She wrote that the “need of the hour is to solidify the Ghatal Masterplan and act on it on an urgent basis”. Banerjee said  that meanwhile, the state government is providing support to the people.

The Bengal CM said that Ghatal suffers every year due to its geographical location, and the implementation of a masterplan to overcome the situation is very essential. She said that though the issue was raised repeatedly in the Parliament, nothing had been done about it.

Recently, the Ghatal MP from Trinamool Congress, Dev Adhikary, had said that till Mamata Banerjee becomes the Prime Minister, the Ghatal masterplan would not be implemented, adding that he had raised the matter repeatedly with the Central government but the matter was not taken seriously. “If, instead of issuing funds after the floods, the Centre implements the masterplan, the situation can be prevented. But unfortunately, nothing has been done by the Centre to prevent the flooding, and people continue to suffer,” he said.
