Nirbhaya case: Four rapists to be hanged at 7 am on Jan 22, Delhi Court issues death warrant

A Delhi court on Tuesday issued the death warrant against the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape case of 2012. The brutal rape and murder had shocked and outraged people across the nation and made international headlines. The time of hanging has been fixed at 7 am on January 22 at Tihar Jail. The four convicts to be hanged are Pawan Gupta, Mukesh, Akshay Singh and Vinay Sharma.

Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora issued the death warrants and said the convicts can use their legal remedies within 14 days. The prosecution said that between issuing of the death warrants and the execution of the warrants, the convicts can file curative petitions if they wanted to. The lawyer of the convicts said that they will file a curative petition in the Supreme Court.

Six persons were arrested and charged with rape and murder of Nirbhaya in 2012. One of the accused was a minor and was tried in the juvenile justice court. Another accused committed suicide in Tihar Jail. The remaining four were sentenced to death by a trial court in September 2013, and the verdict was confirmed by Delhi High Court in 2014 and upheld by Supreme Court in 2017. Their review policies were dismissed too.

According to Nirbhaya’s mother, the execution will empower women in the country.
