Passenger offloaded from Jet Airways Kolkata-Mumbai flight over “terrorist” joke

A passenger on a Jet Airways flight between Kolkata and Mumbai – ready to take off for Mumbai on Monday morning – was offloaded and detained after he photographed himself and uploaded it on social media using a caption that included the word “terrorist”.

Twenty-one year old Yogvedant Poddar had reportedly covered half of his face with a handkerchief and captioned the photograph with the words, “Terrorist on flight, I destroy women’s hearts.” The photograph was being sent on Snapchat.

A co-passenger, who had noticed only part of the caption, thought it important to inform the crew of 9W 472. The crew reported the matter to the pilot who in turn informed the Air Traffic Controller (ATC).

The episode prompted the captain to then turn back on the tarmac so that the passenger could be handed over to the security personnel. He was handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and subsequently to the airports police, where he was questioned.

Poddar is a resident of Kolkata’s Beliaghata. The airports authority officials issued a statement mentioning that Poddar had been detained for “mischievous activity on board” that used language deemed to be “security threat”.

The flight was delayed by more than half an hour before it took off for Mumbai.
