Police case against BJP MP Arjun Singh after his tweet and message on partially charred idol of Hindu deity Kali in Murshidabad

Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Barrackpore, Arjun Singh tweeted on September 1 photographs of an idol of Hindu deity Kali — the structure of which had been blackened apparently in fire and wrote: “The jihadi nature of Didi’s politics is now hell bent on destroying Hindu religion and culture. See how one religious group has attacked and destroyed a temple and burned the idol of Maa Kali in Murshidabad area of West Bengal.”

Photographs of apparently the same idol have been doing the rounds on social media for the past few days. The West Bengal Police has now started a case against Singh for the tweet for trying to create communal trouble. Arjun Singh himself has demanded inquiry on the matter from “any Central government investigating agency”.

The tweet has led to a major controversy not only in West Bengal, but also in several parts of the country. The West Bengal Police has now posted from its official social media account that Arjun Singh’s post is “Misleading”. The state police also wrote: “Legal action is being taken, Please don’t get carried away by misleading, provocative and mischievous posts”.

Social media post of the West Bengal Police

According to the West Bengal Police, on August 31, the idol in a Kali Temple of Alampur under Nowda police station area of Murshidabad district, had caught fire from the wick of a lamp. Local people and members of the temple committee started trying to douse the blaze and police reached the spot. Police and local people eventually brought the fire under control. There was no ransacking nor looting of the temple according to the police.

Meanwhile, the temple committee authorities have said that it was merely an “accident”. An official of the Alampur Kali temple Sukdev Bajpayee in a video has appealed to people to not spread such misinformation on social media. “Hindus and Muslims have been living here for many years peacefully. Please do not spread fake news and posts,” he said in a video.
