Posters “welcome” Mamata Banerjee to Delhi, take a dig at her for Bengal politics

Several posters were seen in different parts of Delhi such as Jantar Mantar Road, Bang Bhawan and the Windsor Palace Circle area to “welcome” the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to the capital city. She is currently in Delhi to attend the Opposition rally being hosted by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The posters however, take a jibe at the state leader in light of the recent political developments in West Bengal.

Installed by a group called Youth for Democracy, the posters carry caricatures of Mamata Banerjee. In a veiled reference to Banerjee’s recent remarks on how the Central government is using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for political motives challenging the federal structure of the state and the basic tenets of democracy, one of the posters said – “Welcome to Delhi, where democracy is alive and kicking, Didi.” Another poster declares – “Didi, no one is going to stop you from addressing the people here.”

A firebrand leader with a great connect with the masses, Banerjee’s presence on the national political scene is tipped to unite the Opposition against the Narendra Modi-led Central government in the coming Lok Sabha elections. The presence of the posters indicate that her presence in Delhi is being taken rather seriously by those watching the developments of mahagathbandhan politics across opposition ranks.
