Rajnath Singh calls CBI-Kolkata Police standoff unfortunate, seeks report from Kolkata Police

Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar had been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam case but he ignored their notices, and this led agency officers to turn up at his residence for questioning on Sunday evening, union home minister Rajnath Singh said in the Parliament today.

The home minister added that the incident was unfortunate and challenged the federal setup of governance in the country. His remarks were greeted with chorus cries of ‘CBI tota hai’ (CBI is the central government’s pet parrot) from the opposition ranks.

Rajnath Singh has also asked the Kolkata Police to file a report on why the CBI officers were denied entry. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members who stood by in support of the home minister today in Parliament include Central ministers like Prakash Javadekar and Smriti Irani.

However, Trinamool MP Sougata Roy pointed out that the CBI officials had sought entry into the police commissioner’s house without a warrant. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge rallied behind the Trinamool Congress and stated in Parliament that the BJP government should desist from using the CBI for political gains.
