Shahid Kapoor in the film “Kabir Singh”: actor slammed on social media for playing misogynistic character
Latest Bollywood release Kabir Singh has generated a lot of interest among people, but certainly for the wrong reasons. Many have slammed the film for “normalising” stalking, abusive relationship, rape and violence.
A number of people took to social media to say that it glorifies and justifies toxic masculinity, and they found it hard to accept that a film released in 2019 could be so regressive. The film had an opening day business of Rs 20.21 crore. Kabir Singh is directed by Sandeep Vanga, and is a remake of the director’s own Telugu film, Arjun Reddy.
Singer Sona Mohapatra and author Paro Anand wrote on social media that Shahid Kapoor should have been responsible before choosing to play the role.
Mohapatra, in a series of tweets wrote: “Does the actor have no responsibility for choosing to play a part in a narrative that can set us back as a society? Is that all we have become? Creatures of ambition? #LetsTalk #India #KabirSingh”
Author Paro Anand, in an open letter to Shahid Kappor wrote:
Dear Shahid Kapoor,
I have long been a fan of yours and admired your talent and choice of roles. So my heart breaks that you would have agreed to do a role like KABIR SINGH. Glorifying a hateful, misogynistic, entitled man in 2019 is nothing short of puke worthy. You, as a hero to so many young people have a responsibility to change mindsets. As the husband of a wonderful, intelligent young woman (I know, I taught her) you should know better than to have accepted such a role. Or if you had, to somewhere carry the message that this is not how we want our men to behave. As a father of young children, is this the kind of man you’d be comfortable your kids seeing? As the father of a little girl, are you not scared that by portraying a Kabir Singh, you are perpetuating a misogynistic characteristic which has been so prevalent in our country in any case?
You, as a hero open the film with a rape scene at knife point! Are you seriously okay with that? Yes, that is a movie character, not Shahid Kapoor, but don’t you think that for many it becomes one and the same thing.
You have too important a role to play, you have to behave responsibly. This is not what I expected from you.
If you don’t believe me, just look at some of the comments from men who are trashing feminists, trashing #MeToo.. Look even at young women coming out of the theatre and calling the character sexy. Think of your wife and daughter and think if you are okay with this portrayal of sexy men. And to the rest of the thinking world, all I can say is. Please, let’s not give credit where no credit is due. Don’t see this movie of violence in the face of entitled love.

It was not just women, a number of men criticised the film for the same reason. Giridhar Sreenivasan (Twitter handle @giridhar_sreeni) wrote: “#Kabirsingh The kind of movie that shouldn’t have been made in the first place, let alone remade. How could a movie be allowed to not just normalise but celebrate misogyny and sexism to this extent? Appalling. Easily one of the worst movies I have ever watched. #KabirSinghReview
