Sitalkuchi deaths: Didi & her goons are afraid, says Modi; Mamata Banerjee questions “self-defence” theory
4 Trinamool workers were shot dead this morning in Cooch Behar's Sitalkuchi
After four persons were shot dead by security forces on Saturday morning in West Bengal’s Sitalkuchi of Cooch Behar district during a clash outside a polling booth during the fourth phase of elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress top leadership entered into a blame-game.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and her party at an election rally in Bengal right after the incident. “What happened in Cooch Behar is sad. I offer condolences to the families. Mamata didi and her goons are scared and jittery because of support for the BJP,” PM Modi said at the rally. Banerjee attacked the Centre for the incident and demanded Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation. “The BJP knows it won’t win so it’s resorting to violence and justifying the deaths as an act of defence. How is it an act of defence? Who among the Central forces was injured?” she asked.
Banerjee said that the Central forces are harassing people in villages, and are asking people to vote for the BJP. “They have shot people standing in line to vote. Who are they? How did they get so much courage? Who is sending instructions?” Banerjee said. Her party will be organising protests across the state on Sunday. She demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the incident.
The Election Commission is reported to have got a preliminary report from Vivek Dubey, the special police observer for Bengal. The EC authorities confirmed firing by the central forces. At a press conference later in the day, Banerjee said that the few visuals of the incident taken by some people had been forcibly deleted. She said that a probe would be conducted by the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
