Sitaram Yechury accuses BJP of politicising Pulwama terror attack

Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India Marxist (CPIM) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of politicising the recent Pulwama terror attack on Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF) jawans which claimed the lives of more than 40 soldiers last Thursday.

Stating that attempts to generate ‘electoral benefits’ out of the unfortunate incident was ‘wrong for the country’s security’, Yechury told ANI that BJP president Amit Shah had spoken at a rally in Assam on February 17 after the terror attack promising action and a ‘befitting reply’ as the BJP government was different from the UPA government before it.

Pointing out the need for ‘accountability’, Yechury added that the BJP should first explain how such an incident could occur in the first place – given that the BJP has been at the helm of affairs for the last four years. The CPIM general secretary also questioned the Prime Minister on his breach of protocol in going to receive the Saudi Arabia’s crown prince upon his arrival last Tuesday in India. Yechury pointed out that the crown prince had recently announced a generous aid package for Pakistan making the Prime Minister’s presence at the airport – ‘unprecedented’.

Further, the CPIM general secretary spoke on the upcoming elections in the country stressing on the need to defeat the BJP at the Centre, Congress in Kerala and the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.
