Sushil Chandra to take over as new chief of Election Commission on Tuesday

CEC Sunil Arora's tenure is over today.

Sushil Chandra has been appointed the new Chief Election Commissioner of India. He will take charge on Tuesday from the former CEC Sunil Arora. Chandra will serve as the CEC till May 14, 2022.

Chandra was appointed Election Commissioner in February 2019, just ahead of the Lok Sabha election. During his term in office, Chandra will oversee elections in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur, apart from looking at the current elections, including in West Bengal till its conclusion on April 29. Results in five states where polls are either ongoing or just concluded – Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam – will be out on May 2.

Before being appointed in the Election Commission, Sushil Chandra was chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
