A “deep depression” that has developed over west-central Bay of Bengal may intensify into a cyclonic storm in south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has alerted. The depression may cross the coastal areas between Kalingapatnam and Puri, close to Gopalpur around midnight, the IMD added.

Rainfall is also predicted for Telangana, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and parts of adjoining regions such as Vidarbha, Rayalaseema, east and west Madhya Pradesh and east Rajasthan.

Coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh will get heavy rainfall. There are warnings that the sea will be very rough in certain areas over north Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh over the coming 24 hours. Fishermen from these regions have been advised to not venture into the sea.

An IMD release said: “Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 km/hour gusting to 65 km/hour is very likely along and off Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh Coasts during next 06 hours. It will gradually increase becoming 60-70 km/hour gusting 80 km/hour from today evening for subsequent 12 hours.”
