Trinamool minority cell finds ally to resist Owaisi in coming Bengal Assembly election

The minority cell of the Trinamool Congress has joined hands with the All India Minority Organisation (AIMO) – a move that is being seen to fight Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM in the coming Assembly elections in West Bengal. The AIMO is an umbrella organisation that works for the cause of the minorities.

AIMIM attracting Muslim votes in Bihar has negatively impacted the grand alliance, the Mahagathbandhan (the pre-poll alliance of the RJD, Congress and the Left parties). AIMIM has won five Assembly seats in Bihar, including Baisi, Kochadhaman and Bahadurgunj. After Bihar, Owaisi’s next target is expected to be West Bengal, and the AIMIM may field candidates in Bengal in areas with high Muslim population. Already the AIMIM is somewhat active in these belts.

According to Nasir Ahmed, the working president of Trinamool Congress’ minority cell, there will be campaigns across Bengal keeping in mind the interest of the minorities. Ahmed is also the all-India president of the AIMO. He said that the primary aim of the Trinamool’s minority cell would be to consolidate the Muslim votes.

By pre-empting the move and activities of the AIMIM, the Trinamool Congress is thus gearing up and planning to work through its own minority cell to woo the Muslims.
