Trinamool responds with “Varanasi 2024” after Modi’s jibe on Mamata Banerjee’s Nandigram performance

Modi said Banerjee is looking for another seat to contest, fearing defeat in Nandigram.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said on Thursday that the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is looking for a second constituency as she is afraid of losing from Nandigram, where she is contesting against her once close aide, now Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Suvendu Adhikari.

In response, Trinamool Congress referred to the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, adding that Banerjee is confident of her win from Nandigram and is not looking to contest from any other constituency.

“Didi is winning Nandigram. The question of her fighting from another seat doesn’t arise. Narendra Modi ji, retract from your efforts to mislead people before they see your lies with the end of nomination in West Bengal. Look for a safer seat in 2024, as you will be challenged in Varanasi,” the Trinamool Congress wrote in a tweet on Thursday. Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh is PM Modi’s Parliamentary constituency since 2014, from where he won and came to power with BJP’s landslide victory.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also posted on social media in the same lines. She took to Twitter to write: “‘Contesting from second seat?’ PM Modi jabs Mamata Banerjee Yes Mr. Prime Minister, she will. And it will be Varanasi! So go get your armour on.”

On Thursday, 30 seats in Bengal went to the polls in the second phase of elections in Bengal, including in Nandigram. PM Modi addressed two rallies in which he said there were “rumours” that Banerjee will be contesting from another seat, fearing defeat in Nandigram.

“Didi, is there any truth in the rumour that you are going to file your nomination from another constituency? First you went there (Nandigram) and people gave you an answer. If you go somewhere else, people of Bengal are ready to respond,” he said, at Joynagar of South 24 Parganas.
