Early trends indicated losses for the Trinamool Congress from some of the party’s important seats, especially in Barrackpore where it is a prestige fight for Bengal’s ruling party.
Trinamool Congress lawmaker Arjun Singh joined the BJP on being denied ticket from Barrackpore. He was later fielded by the BJP from the seat against Trinamool Congress’ two-time MP Dinesh Trivedi. Early trends indicated the Dinesh Trivedi was trailing. Byelections were also held in Bhatpara Assembly seat which fell vacant with Arjun Singh leaving the party. The BJP was also leading from this seat, with Trinamool Congress’ Madan Mitra trailing.
Other Trinamool Congress candidates suffering setback were Moon Moon Sen from Asansol who was trailing far behind BJP’s Babul Supriyo. Trinamool Congress’ Dipak Adhikary (Dev) was also trailing behind BJP’s candidate Bharati Ghosh. In Midnapore, Trinamool Congress’ Manas Bhuniya was trailing behind BJP’s Dilip Ghosh.
BJP’s Samik Bhattacharya was trailing from Dum Dum, with Trinamool’s Sougata Roy ahead of him. Debasree Majumdar, who was being looked at as a star candidate of the BJP – contesting from the Raigunj seat – was also trailing. The CPI(M)’s Bikash Bhattacharya, was trailing from the Jadavpur seat – behind Trinamool Congress’ Mimi Chakraborty.
