State government employees will get higher salary from January 2020 following the state government adopting the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.

Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee today announced that the state will implement the recommendations of the Sixth pay commission from January 1, 2020. She was speaking at a gathering of state employees in Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium.

Banerjee said that the minimum basic pay will be Rs.17,990 for government employees and the gratuity will increase from Rs 6 lakh to 10 lakh. In order to implement this, the government will have to incur an additional expense of Rs.10,000 crore.

It was not made clear though that when the arrears is going to be disbursed. Banerjee sought cooperation from the state employees saying that the more the state employees contribute to the government, the more the government will look after them.

The Sixth Pay Commission recommendations have been due since 2016.
