After a prolonged tug of war between BJP and Congress-Janata Dal (Secular), B.S Yeddyurappa was sworn in on Thursday morning as the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka in his third-term as the CM.
Earlier, the Supreme Court of India, in an late night hearing, refused to put a stay-order in the oath ceremony after Congress and JD(S) moved to the apex court seeking a stay-order in Governor Vajubhai Vala’s decision to invite BJP to form the government in spite failing eight seats shorts of clear majority. However, the apex court said it would continue to hear the plea.
Terming the episode of the BJP invited to form the government as a ‘defeat of democracy’, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said that India would mourn over this biased decision taken by the Governor. He further alleged that the BJP was making a mockery of the Constitution. Meanwhile BJP president Amit Shah slammed Congress and JD(S) saying they have no rights to claim power even after getting defeated by a ‘huge’ margin.
Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda joined the protest organized by Congress in front the Vidhana Soudha. Former CM Siddaramaiah warned that the protest would continue till they got proper justice. Senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani approached the apex court against the Governor’s ‘gross abuse of Constitutional power’.
