2.82 lakh new COVID cases in India, 18% increase in 24 hours

8,961 cases of Omicron variant reported, increase by 0.79 per cent since yesterday. 

Over 2.82 lakh new Covid cases were reported in India over the past 24 hours, which is a rise of 18 per cent from yesterday’s count. The positivity rate has also increased from 14.43 per cent to 15.13 per cent. There has been 8,961 cases of the fast-spreading Omicron variant, which increased by 0.79 per cent since yesterday.

Altogether 441 deaths due to the infection were reported in the past 24 hours – which is much higher than yesterday’s count of 310 deaths. Over 1.88 lakh patients have recovered from Covid over the past 24 hours and the country’s recovery rate is now 93.88 per cent.

Over 158 crore doses of vaccines have been administered under the nationwide drive. The Centre yesterday said testing numbers were falling and states need to ramp up.

With the third wave seen increasing daily case counts in big cities, governments have been forced to impose curbs that had been eased after the second wave.
