The country recorded its lowest count of one day increase in COVID-19 cases in eight months, according to figures released by the Union Health Ministry. Altogether 8,635 new cases were reported, the lowest figure recorded in about eight months.
The previous lowest reported figure was recorded on June 2, when it was 8,171 cases in a day. There have been 1,07,66,245 reported cases since January 30 last year. A total of 1,54,486 deaths have been reported and over 1.04 crore persons have recovered in a year. There were 94 deaths in the last 24 hours, though the lowest number of deaths reported was on May 12 (when 87 deaths were reported). The death rate in India has been dropping since October 2020.
A ministry statement added though that “At a time when almost all states/union territories are showing a declining trend in the number of cases and deaths due to COVID-19, Kerala and Maharashtra continue to report a large number of cases. At present, these two states alone are contributing to almost 70% active COVID-19 cases in the country”. Two specialised teams have been sent to these states by the Central government.
