Actor Saayoni Ghosh, against whom BJP’s Tathagata Roy had filed complaint, wishes Mukul Roy on his birthday in viral video

Many have raised questions on the timing of the video, and Ghosh's presence in it.

Actor Saayoni Ghosh – against whom senior BJP leader Tathagata Roy had lodged a police complaint recently for a meme shared on Twitter – was seen in a video where several actors from the Bengali film industry wished BJP leader Mukul Roy on his birthday.

The video has led to speculations on the possibility that Ghosh may join the saffron party. The rumour mills went abuzz especially on the day when several big and small stars from the Bengali film industry are expected to join the BJP at a five-star hotel in Kolkata.

But Saayoni Ghosh ruled out such a possibility, saying that she has known Mukul Roy for many years, and her wish for the BJP national vice-president is only “personal”.

In January 2021, Tathagata Roy, also former Meghalaya Governor, had lodged a complaint with Kolkata Police against the actor alleging that a meme shared on Ghosh’s Twitter account had hurt the sentiments of Hindus. Ghosh had said that the meme is from February 2015 and was not posted by her, but was a “mischievous act” by someone who hacked into her account then.

Later, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee backed Saayoni Ghosh, saying she has the right to express her opinion. At a public meeting in Purulia district, Banerjee had said: “Let me see who has the courage to do anything to her.”

Under this backdrop, a section of political leaders and actors from Tollygunge are raising questions on the timing of the video ahead of the Assembly elections 2021, since they could not remember similar videos being made for Mukul Roy’s birthday in earlier years.
