With the aim of winning 42 out of 42 seats in West Bengal in the coming Lok Sabha elections, the Trinamool Congress conducted a ‘yajna’ in West Bengal’s Howrah district.
With priests brought in from the pilgrimage site Tarapith in Birbhum, to perform the yajnas, fire was lit in nine points to conduct the yajnas. Held at Howrah’s 26 number ward in Umesh Banerjee Lane on Sunday, it was attended by senior Trinamool leaders like the state minister in charge of cooperation Arup Roy and Howrah Lok Sabha Trinamool candidate and parliamentarian Prasun Banerjee.
The main organiser of the event was Trinamool district leader from Howrah, Shyamal Mitra, as part of the election campaign of the party. The dates of the general elections have been announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI), and it will be held in seven phases in Bengal.
Sixty kilograms of wood and eight kilograms of ghee were used in the yajna.
The sound of conch shells and ‘ulurdhoni’ (high-pitched vocal sounds) added to the atmosphere of the yajnas attended by hundreds of local people. Held over more than two hours, the yajnas were conducted in front of posters of Trinamool leaders on a big canvas.
Nine fires were lit attended by nine different priests. A big-sized ‘ghot’ (pot used for purposes of worship) was also installed and worshipped before the yajnas commenced.
Speaking on the occasion, Arup Ray stated that the Trinamool Congress respects all religions and expects to win all seats in the general elections on the basis of its performance over the last seven years. The yajna was being performed to dispel the evil intent of negative forces, he added. The minister also stated that no matter who joins the party or leaves it, the party’s position would not be impacted.
He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had come in with a bag of money. Given that it could not make political inroads in the state, the BJP has resorted to dirty games, he stated. Prasun Banerjee was confident that the people of Howrah would once again elect him from the seat.
