CBI files case against Indira Jaising’s NGO Lawyers Collective for alleged FCRA violations

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against senior advocate Anand Grover and his nongovernmental organisation Lawyers Collective for alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.

Grover is a director, and his wife Indira Jaising, a Supreme Court advocate, is a trustee and secretary of the organisation. The first information report named Grover along with others.

It was reported that the Supreme Court had issued a notice to Lawyers Collective for alleged violation of rules after another organisation, Lawyers Voice, had filed a petition seeking action against them.

At that time, Jaising and Grover had said that they were being targeted for speaking up against the procedure followed by the apex court in connection with the sexual harassment charges against Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had cancelled the registration of the NGO under FCRA in 2016, which prevented the organisation from taking funds from abroad. Jaising and Grover have said in a statement recently that the cancellation was done on “illegal grounds” and the organisation has taken appropriate legal proceedings against it and added that there was no mis-utilisation of funds.
