Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde has been appointed the next Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind. Justice Bobde succeeds present CJI Ranjan Gogoi, who will retire on November 17.
Justice Bobde will take oath on November 18 and will retire on April 23, 2021 – a tenure of about 18 months. He is a former Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
He had joined the Bombay High Court in 2000 as additional judge.
He has been involved in important cases before the Supreme Court including the Ayodhya dispute and the BCCI case.
There is a convention that the CJI recommends the name of the next senior judge as his successor a month before his retirement. After the CJI’s recommendation, the Union Law Minister places it before the Prime Minister, and then it is sent to the President.
