Bajrang Dal and VHP activists named in UP cop murder FIR, four arrested

The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested four persons and registered two first information reports (FIRs) naming 27 people in the Bulandshahr violence on Monday that led to two murders including that of police officer Subodh Kumar Singh.

The main accused – Yogesh Raj – named in the FIR is the Bajrang Dal’s district head for Bulandshahr. He could not be arrested yet. Others named in the FIR are members and leaders of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal.

On Monday, Singh and a local youth identified as Sumit, were killed in the Shyana area of UP’s Bulandshahr after clashes broke out over alleged discovery of cow carcasses. Protesters attacked a police outpost and set police vans on fire.

Yogesh Raj, who is the main accused in the case, is also said to be a complainant in a separate case of cow slaughter after several carcasses were reportedly found by the local people.

The local people then blocked a road in protest and when police tried to clear the road, they were attacked. Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh was trying to control the mob and he was hit by a stone in the head. As he was taken to his car to be taken to the hospital, the mob followed his car and he was shot at.

According to a report referring to a video apparently taken by someone in the mob, the inspector is seen hanging out of the car after he was shot, gunshots heard and the mob running around screaming out “goli maro” (shoot him). The mob apparently took away his service gun and mobile phone.

The FIR also mentions another 60 unnamed persons. A Special Investigating Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the case. The SIT will also investigate how and why the other policemen left Singh alone.
