Bank with Amit Shah as director got most banned notes after demonetisation: RTI report

Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank – whose website shows Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah as its director – collected the highest deposits in scrapped Rs. 500 and Rs 1,000 notes following the demonetisation announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016, it was reported by IANS.

In response to a Right to Information (RTI) plea filed by Mumbai-based Manoranjan S Roy, reports of collecting Rs. 745.59 crore of demonetised notes had come to light.

Such a huge amount was deposited in just six days till November 14 as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) later decided to ban district cooperative banks from collecting banned notes fearing corruption, the report said.

Shah has been the director of the bank for quite some time. He also became the chairman of the bank in 2000.

The second position in collection of scrapped notes has gone to Rajkot District Cooperative Bank, where another BJP heavyweight and Gujarat Cabinet minister Jayeshbhai Vitthalbhai Radadiya is the bank’s chairman.
