Bengal has saved the country: Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee's landslide victory in West Bengal.

Bengal has saved the country, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said today as her party got a landslide victory in the state winning 212 seats (with counting on in some seats). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got less than 80 seats.

“Bengal has saved India. I wanted to win 221 as this is the year 2021. I was asked recently how many seats I expected to win and I said I will score a double century,” Banerjee said at a press conference. Her own fight in Nandigram continues as the counting process is not yet complete after several conflicting reports emerged on the “win”, and there is a possibility of re-counting for the constituency.

“This is Bengal’s win and it has saved Bengal, it has saved the culture and tradition of Bengal,” she said. On Nandigram, Banerjee said “Don’t worry about Nandigram. Let the people of Nandigram give whatever verdict they want, I accept that. I don’t mind. We won more than 221 seats in the state and the BJP has lost the election,” she said. She said she will challenge the matter of Nandigram in court. “It is not possible that everywhere the verdict is something and in one seat the verdict is something else,” she said.
