“BJP’s Secret General”: Abhishek Banerjee reacts to Tushar Mehta not providing “proof” on Suvendu Adhikari’s visit

Mehta has denied meeting Suvendu Adhikary in Delhi last week.

An alleged meeting between Bengal’s BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in the office-cum-residence of Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta has become the latest conflict between West Bengal’s ruling party, Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee today took to Twitter to attack Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta saying the latter had failed to release CCTV footage of Adhikari’s visit to Mehta’s Delhi office-cum-residence to prove that no meeting between them had taken place as they have claimed.

Banerjee wrote on Twitter: “Even after 72 hours, Mr Tushar Mehta, Hon’ble SG of India, has failed to release the 20 mins of CCTV footage of his OWN HOUSE to corroborate his OWN STATEMENT. Mr SG, with such weak defence you can continue serving as @BJP4India’s SECRET GENERAL, not INDIA’s SOLICITOR GENERAL.

Last week, after the Trinamool Congress demanded the removal of Mehta as Solicitor General citing Adhikari meeting him was conflict of interest, Mehta said that though the BJP leader from Bengal had gone to his office cum residence there was no actual meeting between the two and Adhikari had visited him “unannounced”.

The Trinamool Congress has alleged “conflict of interest” in the alleged meeting as Adhikari is an accused in various criminal cases. In the Narada case, Adhikari was allegedly caught taking bribes, while in the Saradha chit fund scam case, the prime accused has made “grave allegations” against the BJP leader, who was earlier with the Trinamool Congress. Trinamool Congress leaders pointed out that while Mehta is representing the CBI in the Narada case, he has advised and appeared for the agency in the Saradha scam case in the past. A conflict of interest was thus pointed out.
