CBI to have interim chief for now, after RK Shukla’s retirement: report

Praveen Sinha, additional director CBI, will take over as interim chief for a few days.

The government will take some time to select the new director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as the current chief RK Shukla’s term ends today, according to a report of the NDTV.

The report said that a high-powered committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will decide on a new candidate “soon”, but till then there will be an acting chief – Praveen Sinha, additional director in the CBI, will take over as interim director of the country’s top investigating agency for a few days.

The top contenders for the CBI chief’s post are Rakesh Asthana who is chief of the Border Security Force (BSF), YC Modi, who heads the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, former Maharashtra police chief and current head of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Loknath Behera, Kerala police chief and SS Deswal, Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

The CBI chief is appointed by a PM-led committee that includes Chief Justice of India and the leader of the biggest opposition party. The panel will meet soon, possibly after the Budget session, the report said quoting sources.
