COVID-19: Lowest daily rise since April 1, but death toll still high

There were 70,421 new coronavirus cases reported in the country on Monday, taking the overall tally to 2,95,10,410 since the pandemic broke out in January 2020. This is the lowest single-day rise in cases since April 1, when the country had 72,330 new cases.

The death toll however, rose by 3,921, taking the figure to 3,74,305.

The state governments in Delhi and Tamil Nadu have eased restrictions from Monday. Karnataka has also allowed unlocking in several phases from today.

The Bengal government meanwhile, is expected today to announce its decision on whether it plans to ease out restrictions, or whether similar restrictions will continue further. There have been restrictions for the past four weeks in Bengal. Officials say that some restrictions will continue but overall, with the COVID-19 situation improving, there may be re-opening of public transport, shops and restaurants.
