COVID-19: Over 4 lakh cases in a day in India, new global record

The third phase of vaccination started today.

India recorded 4,01,993 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours with 3,523 deaths reported. This is a new global record of COVID-19, with the country recording over three lakh cases daily for nine consecutive days now.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a meeting with his council of ministers. “Discussed the various steps being undertaken including coordination with the states, augmenting medical capacities and boosting oxygen availability,” PM Modi said after the meeting.

Meanwhile, the third phase of vaccination started today as those from 18 years and above have been made eligible for the vaccine from May 1. But several states have already reported shortage in the supply of the vaccine. Earlier, those above 60 years and those with comorbidities were made eligible. Then citizens who are 45 years and above were also made eligible for the vaccine. The vaccination drive first started with frontline workers such as doctors, nurses, police personnel and so on.

Several states such as Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh – have reported low stocks of the vaccine. The Centre however, has said that 1 crore doses are available with the states.

West Bengal announced a partial lockdown on Friday — to be implemented from today — after the eight-phased Assembly polls concluded on April 29. Results will be out tomorrow, May 2.
