The Bengal Story Bureau: Punjabi actor and singer Gippy Grewal shared a humorous anecdote about his close friendship with Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, revealing that he initially struggled to respond to the veteran actor’s text messages in English. Speaking on the talk show Shekhar Tonite hosted by Shekhar Suman, Grewal disclosed that he had to rely on his manager and an overseas friend to draft responses to Khan for several months.
The friendship began when Grewal received a communication through Yash Raj Films indicating that Khan wished to speak with him to collaborate on promotional activities in Punjab. The two creative personalities connected instantly during their initial meeting, sharing dinner before Khan personally dropped Grewal back to his hotel.
The English Message Dilemma
The challenge arose the following morning when Grewal received a lengthy follow-up message from Khan written entirely in English. While Grewal could read and fully comprehend the text, he found himself unable to compose an appropriately polished response in the same language.
In a bid to maintain the conversation, Grewal woke up his manager and requested him to draft an appropriate reply based on specific points. Khan responded within half an hour with an even longer message, by which time the manager had fallen back asleep and stopped answering calls.
Coming Clean After Months
Determined to keep up the momentum, Grewal reached out to a close friend residing in Canada to assist in drafting the subsequent text message response. This practice continued for a period of six to eight months, with Grewal constantly utilizing different associates to frame his text replies to the Bollywood star.
The arrangement ended when their relationship grew strong enough for Grewal to comfortably admit the truth to his friend. Following the confession, the two actors transitioned to communicating primarily through voice notes to avoid any language barriers. Grewal also praised the humility of Khan, noting that the superstar consistently insists on seeing off his household guests personally.
