There is heavy rainfall in four districts of north Bengal – Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Siliguri – since Monday.
The rains started from Monday night and continued ceaselessly till Tuesday afternoon. Large parts of villages and towns in all the four districts have become waterlogged leading to severe inconveniences for people.
An anganwadi centre and a primary school were damaged by the flash flood in Sukhani river which flows in the area. The school is reported to be dangerously leaning towards the Sukhani river and runs the risk of going under water if there is anymore rise in the water level. Other rivers in the area, like Teesta, Mahananda are also overflowing due to continuous rain for the past four days.
There are reports that the sudden heavy rainfall is due to the northward displacement of the monsoon trough. Conditions are expected to improve from Wednesday.
