Home Ministry urges states to ensure safety of Kashmiris across India

In the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack, a group of Kashmiri students in Dehradun have alleged that they were asked to vacate their rented flats by their landlords who fear a backlash of violence against the students on their properties. Similar complaints have also emerged from Haryana.

As reports of harassment and threats against the Kashmiri minority groups trickle in from across the country, the Home Ministry has issued a statement urging state governments to ensure that they remain protected. In its advisory, the Home Ministry has asked the states to adopt all ‘necessary measures’ to contain the situation.

Earlier, Mehbooba Mufti – leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former chief minister – had also communicated her concerns to the Home Ministry and expressed her ‘distress’.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has also described the Kashmiris living in other parts of India as ‘soft targets’ in a recent tweet and requested the Home Ministry to take ‘special care’ to avoid untoward incidents.

Several helplines have been activated on social media and the Jammu and Kashmir police have assured that anyone who needs their help can contact them. A police spokesperson in Dehradun added that the Jammu and Kashmir police are working in tandem with the Dehradun police to ensure the safety of Kashmiris based outside the state.
