Criticising the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Sunday said that despite being the fastest-growing economy in the world, India has been continuously moving backwards and has taken “quantum jump in the wrong direction” since 2014.
During the launch of the Hindi translation of his book ‘An Uncertain Glory: India and its Contradiction’, Sen said that the government has not focused on the issues of inequalities, the caste system and the schedules tribes.
Mentioning the recent report of a Dalit youth being thrashed by his employer in Madhya Pradesh as the former asked for salary, Sen said the Dalits were struggling enormously in India. They don’t have any certainty whether they would get their next meal.
Sen also came down heavily on the Centre for using Hindu identity as a means of winning elections.
