Intelligence inputs on violence, UP govt tells Suprme Court on cremating Hathras woman in the middle of the night

The body of the 20-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras was cremated in the middle of the night “to avoid large-scale violence” the next morning, the state government told the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The UP government told the apex court in an affidavit that there were intelligence inputs about “major law and order problems”, according to a report of the NDTV.

The government said that there was an alert due to the Babri Masjid verdict the day before. The UP government said that “the whole issue was being exploited and a caste/communal colour was being given” to the incident.

The Yogi Adityanath government in UP has been criticised for the brutal handling of case of rape and murder of the 20-year-old woman. The gang-raped woman who died last week was cremated in the dead of night by the police without the family’s presence. The UP Police took away her body from the hospital to the village and cremated the body forcibly and locked the family in their home. The brutal killing and the inhuman, forcible cremation has led to nation-wide anger.
