Legendary singer Sandhya Mukherjee hospitalised

She has been admitted to the state-run SSKM Hospital.

Legendary singer Sandhya Mukherjee was rushed to a hospital on Thursday morning after she complained of breathlessness. She was taken to the state-run SSKM Hospital from her south Calcutta residence through a green corridor created by the Kolkata Police. Mukherjee had slipped in the bathroom on Tuesday and her health condition started to deteriorate on Wednesday evening.

She is reported to have infection in the lungs. Currently, she is undergoing treatment at the Woodburn Block of SSKM Hospital. A medical board has been set up at the SSKM to monitor her health condition. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is learnt to have spoken with the family members of the legendary singer.

Mukherjee, a recipient of “Banga Bibhushan” and the National Film Award for best female playback singer, had a couple of days back refused an offer of a Padma Shri award when she was contacted by Central government officials over telephone. Her daughter Soumi Sengupta had said that “at 90, with a singing career spanning over about eight decades, being chosen for Padma Shri is demeaning for a singer of her stature.”

She is a legendary singer who has sung for numerous Bengali films and several Hindi movies and worked with leading music directors including S.D.Burman, Madan Mohan, Naushad, Anil Biswas and Salil Chaudhury.
