Mamata Banerjee-Abhishek Banerjee meet to strategise on Jan 22 civic body polls

Elections in Siliguri, Asansol, Salt Lake and Chandannagar.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and her party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are holding a meeting at Kalighat for finalising the candidates for civic polls in the state on January 22. Elections for four civic bodies — Siliguri, Asansol, Salt Lake and Chandannagar — are scheduled and the party will finalise the list of candidates in the meeting today.

Senior party leaders such as Subrata Bakshi, Sujit Bose, Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas are among others present in the meeting. Apart from finalising the names of candidates who will contest from 227 seats in these civic bodies, there are other issues involved such as working out the key strategies.

There is also the issue of projecting the mayor candidates from these four civic bodies, especially in Salt Lake. With Covid cases surging and the threat of the Omicron variant, the opposition is pressuring the ruling party to postpone the civic polls, and these issues are also to be discussed in the meeting.
