West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will hold three rallies opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the suburbs after returning from the hills where she has been holding public meetings and protest rallies on the same issue currently.
The rallies will be held in Bongaon, Ranaghat and Kalyani-Chakdah-Gayeshpur assembly seats in early February.
Banerjee’s party, the Trinamool Congress announced a series of programmes on Friday focused on CAA-NRC ahead of the municipal elections that are due to be held in April. Trinamool general secretary Partha Chatterjee said that the party will hold rallies and public meetings at the block level on February 1 and 2.
On February 5, there will be human chains across the state at several places between 2 and 3 pm. This will be followed by a silent protest march on February 6 where the protesters will hold rallies with anti-CAA-NRC posters. On February 7, there will be street corner meetings on the CAA-NRC issue.
The party representatives will make door-to-door visits in all the tribal villages on February 8 and 9 and explain to them the basis of citizenship against the backdrop of CAA and NRC. This will be done to allay their fears and clear any confusion that they might have about the CAA and NRC. On February 10 and 13, Trinamool Congress MLAs and MPs will conduct a door-to-door campaign against CAA-NRC along with the local leaders and booth-level workers.
The programmes are being planned as part of the party’s campaign for the upcoming municipal elections. Banerjee has been conducting rallies and public meetings across the state on the same issue for a long time now and has received favourable responses from people, a party leader said.
