Monsoon session starts today, fierce Centre-Opposition battle likely

As the Monsoon Session of the Parliament starts today, there are a number of bills and issues to be debated over by the Centre and the Opposition parties. The session starts today and ends August 10, with 18 sittings.

Last night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a session before the commencement of the monsoon session’s smooth functioning. Besides, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkiah Naidu also chaired two separate all party meetings to ensure that the monsoon session goes well.

While Modi is looking forward to a session that can showcase the government in positive light, the Opposition parties are looking to target the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government on various bills, amendments and issues. The spate of lynching all over the country, attack on Dalits and minorities are expected to be raised by the Opposition parties.

This session has 48 items – 46 bills and two financial matters. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill or the anti-instant triple talaq bill and The Constitution (123rd Amendment) Bill, that gives Constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes, The National Medical Commission Bill, The Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill are some of the bills on the agenda.
