The Supreme Court today asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to file an affidavit on the action to be taken by the latter regarding the voting rights of those individuals whose names figured in the electoral rolls but not in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam.
The apex court bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna asked the ECI to tell the court what action the institution will take in this matter, it was reported by Bar & Bench.
A petition had been filed seeking voting rights for persons whose names do not figure in the NRC.
Earlier, the Court had asked the EC secretary to be present and clarify the position on this. The bench had then asked the ECI to provide details of inclusions and deletions of names in the electoral rolls between January 1, 2018 and January 1, 2019.
Senior Counsel Vikash Singh, appearing for the EC, had submitted before the Court that the petition had been filed on false grounds that the names of the petitioners had been deleted from the electoral rolls. The court had asked him to put this on record, the report added.
However, on the allegations that the names of individuals whose names were not in the NRC were being dropped from the electoral rolls, the EC had told the Court that it was not the case.
