Nirbhaya Case: four days left for hanging, apex court rejects convict’s fresh petition

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a fresh curative petition by one of the death-row convicts in Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. The petition was filed by Mukesh Singh who has already exhausted all legal remedies along with three other death-row convicts in the case.
The Court told Mukesh that he had no remedies left as his mercy plea was rejected by the President and his earlier curative petition was dismissed too.
Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Singh and Pawan Gupta are sentenced to hang on March 20 at Delhi’s Tihar Jail. This is the fourth death sentence issued in the case as the previous ones were invalidated as the convicts resorted to legal remedies.
Six persons were arrested and charged with rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi in 2012, which came to be known as the Nirbhaya case. One of the accused was a minor and was tried in the juvenile justice court. He was released after three years. Another accused – Ram Singh – had allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail.
