No NRC in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee reiterates

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee reiterated her firm stance against implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state on Tuesday.

She was speaking at a public address in Birsingha village, West Midnapore – the birthplace of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, the Bengal Renaissance icon. The programme was organised to mark the bicentennial birth anniversary celebration Vidyasagar.

Banerjee reassured people that NRC won’t be implemented in the state, and told them they should not be afraid. She said the ongoing Census was a routine procedure that is carried out every ten years, and asked people not to panic about it. She said that the country had attained freedom and nothing would be done to make people lose it again. “No one can implement NRC here. I make this promise here,” she said at Birsingha village.

Banerjee reminded people that those who had vandalised the Vidyasagar College premises do not even know who he is. A bust of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar was broken during a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rally prior to the Lok Sabha elections. The bust was smashed on the floor by some goons who had barged into the college premises.

At the programme today, Banerjee announced the plan for an academy and a research centre. She also said she plans to turn Birsingha village into an education hub and a tourist spot like Santiniketan.
