PM Modi says 40 Trinamool lawmakers in touch with BJP for switchover; Trinamool moves EC alleging horse-trading

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that 40 Trinamool Congress lawmakers were in touch with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and were keen on joining them.

“They are waiting for the results to be out on May 23,” Modi said at an election rally in Bengal.

Elections are on in the fourth phase in the state in Baharampur, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Bardhaman Purba, Bardhaman-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur and Birbhum parliamentary seats.

The Trinamool Congress reacted sharply to this comment by the Prime Minister. The party’s MP Derek O’Brien tweeted: “Expiry Babu PM, let’s get this straight. Nobody will go with you. Not even one councillor. Are you election campaigning or horse trading! Your expiry date is near. Today, we are complaining to the Election Commission. Charging you with horse trading.”
