The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary, Ram Madhav on Thursday took a jibe at the plea for house arrest for the arrested activists. At Hyderabad he said that activists who support the Naxals are scared of going to jail these days.
“Some activists are afraid to go to jail and are therefore requesting for house arrest,” he said. Ram Madhav also said that Naxalism will soon be a thing of the past in this country. “Already it has come down in the districts due to the constant efforts of the government,” he said, adding that there were some people living in the cities who supported Naxalism and that needed to end too.
“Naxalites are enemies and some of their supporters are professors and human rights members,” he was quoted by the ANI as saying.
Ram Madhav’s comments are with reference to the Supreme Court saying on Wednesday that the five activists arrested in connection with terror charges are to be kept under house arrest till the next hearing on September 6. The five activists arrested by Pune police on Tuesday are Varavara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Fereira, Gautam Navlakha and Vernon Gonsalves. The petitioners including historian Romila Thapar, wanted the arrests to be put on hold and sought an independent probe into the matter.
