Yashwant Sinha, former BJP cabinet minister, joins Trinamool

He was Union Finance Minister under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Yashwant Sinha, former Union Finance Minister under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, joined the Trinamool Congress on Saturday.

The 83-year-old Sinha is a senior leader who had quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2018.

Sinha, at a press conference in Kolkata, where he joined Bengal’s ruling party officially, said that he is confident that the Trinamool Congress will come back to power in Bengal with a thumping majority, and the Bengal elections are significant nationally in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“Let there be a message to the country from Bengal that the country won’t accept what Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are doing at the Centre,” he said. Sinha said that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government of which he was a part, believed in consensus, but the current BJP government at the Centre does not believe it. “All the allies of BJP are leaving them gradually, from Akali Dal to Shiv Sena. Other than the JDU in Bihar, most other of its oldest allies are no longer with them,” he said.

Sinha said that the fight in the coming days is “not just political, it is a fight to retain democracy in the country. All those who feel the need to retain democracy in India, must come together,” he said.

He said that he had called on Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee this morning, and spoke with her on various issues for 40 minutes.
