Trinamool MP Mohua Moitra moves Supreme Court against Citizenship Act

Trinamool Congress MP Mohua Moitra has moved the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Act – that was passed by both houses of the Parliament this week amidst violent protests in the Northeast. The bill – made into an act through clearance of the Parliament – has also been ratified by the President of India on Thursday night.

Moitra moved court challenging the Act – her lawyer appealing for an urgent hearing of the matter. The appeal for urgent hearing though, has not been granted by the apex court.

Also, The Indian Union Muslim League had, on Thursday itself moved the Supreme Court challenging the constitutional validity of the amendments to the Citizenship Act. Representing The Indian Union Muslim League as their lawyer in court, Congress leader Kapil Sibbal has said that an appeal has been made before the court to announce this bill as illegal, and contradicting the Constitution.

There are indications that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress might also move court against the bill.
