Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi and Maharashtra have confirmed bird flu as attempts are on across the country to prevent its spread. Two other states also on alert are Chhattisgarh and Jammu & Kashmir.
There have been recent bird deaths and the reasons have been attributed to Avian influenza. A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture will discuss the matter and look at the availability of animal vaccines on Monday. The committee has asked senior officials of the Ministry of Animal Husbandry to look into the matter.
Of the bird deaths reported, Haryana has the highest number. Over 4 lakh bird deaths have been reported over the past few weeks in these states.
Delhi has banned import of live birds and large wholesale markets have been temporarily shut down in many of these states. In some states, including Kerala and Haryana, culling has been done.
All states have been asked to be on alert, especially to avoid the spread of the disease to humans. Water bodies, bird markets, zoos, poultry farms have been asked to be kept under check constantly. State governments have also been asked to ensure no rumours are spread.
