Santoor maestro Pt Shivkumar Sharma passes away

Renowned santoor player Pt Shivkumar Sharma passed away in Mumbai on Tuesday morning. He was 84.

He is survived by wife Manorama and sons Rahul and Rohit. Rahul is also a santoor player. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those who condoled Pt Shivkumar Sharma’s death. “Our cultural world is poorer with the demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. He popularised the Santoor at a global level,” PM Modi said.

A Padma Vibhushan recipient, Pt Shivkumar Sharma was born in Jammu in 1938. He also composed music for Hindi films as part of the duo Shiv-Hari along with flute legend, Pt Hari Prasad Chaurasia. Their compositions were for films such as “Lamhe”, “Silsila”, “Chandni”, “Darr”.

Pt Shivkumar Sharma received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, the Padma Shri in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
