Ten killed in powerful earthquake in Indonesia

Ten persons were killed after an earthquake struck in the Indonesian island of Lombok on Sunday. It was a 6.4-magnitude earthquake.

Lombok is in the southeastern Indonesia and a popular tourist destination, approximately 100 km from Bali. The quake hit 50 km northeast of Lombok’s main city Mataram, which is far from the main tourist spots.

The epicentre of the earthquake is said to be at the depth of seven km, and hit at local time 6.47 am. One person died in East Lombok and two died in North Lombok, it was reported. No details were however, available on how the tourists died. Two dozen others were injured and a house was badly damaged in North Lombok.

In 2004, a tsunami triggered by an undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, in western Indonesia, killed 2,20,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 1,68,000 in Indonesia.
