Cyclone Fani: Kolkata airport to remain closed from 3 pm today till 8 am on Saturday

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport will remain closed from 3 pm today till 8 am on Saturday as Cyclone Fani is expected to make landfall in the morning. No flights will take off or land from the airport during this time.

Flights from Bhubaneswar have already been cancelled from midnight as the cyclone is hitting the Odisha coast today. According to reports this morning, the cyclone has already started making its impact felt along the Odisha coast.

The DGCA has in its advisory, said that flights were being cancelled to avoid passenger inconvenience. Flights will resume once there is a clearance following improved weather conditions.

Some airlines authorities have waived off the cancellation fee for flights during the time the airport will remain closed.

Cyclone Fani is likely to impact Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and some parts of Tamil Nadu. Altogether 19 districts in these states are likely to feel the impact. The wind speed, when it hits Odisha, is expected to be 200 km per hour. Already, nearly a million people have been evacuated to safety in Odisha.

In West Bengal, the impact will be felt in East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and Kolkata.
